In short: what fish can you catch in Dubai? On a boat trip off the coast, the usual catches are barracuda, queenfish, kingfish (mostly in the cooler months), trevally and reef fish. What you land depends on the season, the weather and luck, so nobody can guarantee a catch. Our private fishing trips start at AED 375 per hour for the whole boat, with a 4-hour minimum.

What fish can you catch in Dubai? The main species
These are the fish our guests most often meet off Dubai. Think of this list as what is possible on a good day, not a menu.
Barracuda
Long, silver and fast, with a mouth full of sharp teeth. Barracuda hunt around rocks and other structure, where small fish gather. They are exciting to hook, but leave the unhooking to the crew and keep your hands clear of the mouth.
Queenfish
A slim, silver fish known for quick runs and jumps near the surface. Queenfish give a lot of action on the rod, which makes them a favourite with guests who want a lively fight rather than a long wait.
Kingfish
Kingfish are the catch many local anglers wait for. They are more common in the cooler months, roughly October to April, which is one more reason that season is popular for fishing trips.
Trevally
Trevally are strong and stubborn. Even a medium-sized fish will pull hard and test your arms, so they suit guests who enjoy a proper tug-of-war.
Reef fish
Around reefs and rocky bottom you find a mix of smaller reef fish. They tend to bite more readily than the big hunters, which makes them a good first catch for beginners and children.
Fish by season: cooler months vs. summer
| Season | Conditions | What to expect | Best time to go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooler months (roughly October–April) | Mild air, comfortable all day | Kingfish more common, plus barracuda, queenfish, trevally and reef fish | Early morning or late afternoon; longer trips are easy |
| Summer | Hot, especially from late morning | Barracuda, queenfish, trevally and reef fish are still possible | An early-morning start |
The cooler months are the most comfortable time on the water, and you can stay out for 6 hours without the heat wearing you down. In summer, fishing still works, but plan around the sun: book the first start of the morning, bring plenty of sun protection and take advantage of the water, soft drinks and ice that come with every trip.
So what fish can you catch in Dubai in any given month? The list above stays much the same; the season mainly changes your comfort and your chances with kingfish. Whatever the month, early morning and late afternoon are usually the most productive parts of the day.
Where the fish are: breakwaters, islands and reefs
Captains around Dubai fish three main types of ground, and they choose between them on the day:
- The Palm Jumeirah breakwaters. The long rock walls around the Palm hold small fish, and predators follow them. They are close to the marinas, so you spend more time fishing and less time travelling.
- Around The World islands. Further out from the coast, these waters are usually reached on longer trips of 6 hours or more.
- Nearby reefs. Rocky and reef areas off Dubai are where reef fish live, and bigger fish come to hunt.
We do not go into detail on each area here. For that, read our fishing spots guide for Dubai.
Tips for beginners
- Listen to the short briefing. The crew shows you how to drop the line, feel a bite and reel in.
- Keep a steady reel. When a fish takes the bait, keep the rod tip up and wind smoothly instead of pulling hard.
- Let the crew unhook. Barracuda have sharp teeth and many fish have spiky fins. The crew handles this safely.
- Take turns. In a bigger group, share rods so everyone gets time on the line.
- Dress for sun and spray. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and shoes with a good grip make the day easier.
- Be patient. Some spots bite in minutes, others need time. The captain moves if a spot is quiet.

Which boat to book for your fishing goal
Every boat comes with rods, reels, bait and tackle, a captain and crew, fuel, soft drinks, water and ice. Choose by group size and how serious you are about fishing:
- Beginners, couples and families (up to 10): the 36 Ft Luxury Oryx at AED 375 per hour.
- Groups of up to 12: the 48 Ft Gulf Craft at AED 450 per hour, or the 44 Ft Luxury Majesty at AED 475 per hour if some guests want to relax more than fish.
- Keen anglers: the 34 Ft Sea Hunter, a dedicated 2020 fishing boat, at AED 650 per hour for up to 12 guests.
- Hoping for kingfish: go in the cooler months and book 6 hours at the same hourly rate, so the captain can try more grounds.
